Ref: DAY144 1
Departure date: Sat, 19 Apr 2025
Home to royalty and 1,000 years of royal history, Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. It is open to visitors throughout the year. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has since been the home of 40 monarchs, including of course the late Queen Elizabeth II who spent most of her private weekends here.
Windsor Castle offers something for everyone, and with so many areas to explore including the magnificent State Apartments, furnished with some of the finest works of art from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto. Imagine being entertained by royalty in the Semi-State Rooms, the spectacular private apartments open to visitors at certain times of the year. Richly decorated, they are used by the sovereign when hosting guests. Also take in the splendour of St George's Chapel, the burial place of 11 monarchs including Queen Elizabeth II, Henry VIII and Charles I and the location of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England.
We depart Windsor at 16:30 to start our homeward journey back to South Wales.
Please note: Coaches can't set down or pick up passengers at the entrance to Windsor Castle. The coach drop off point is approximately a ten minute walk from Windsor Castle. The Castle is at the top of a steep hill and the visitor route covers reasonably long distances. We recommend you wear comfortable shoes.
