The beautiful town of Caernarfon is home to Wales’s most famous castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which dominates this stunning setting. The town’s narrow streets and stylishly redeveloped waterfront are also perfect to wander, with a feeling of stepping back in time. The castle, built in the 13th century by Edward I as a royal palace and military fortress, was at the core of the medieval walled town, and also the site of the 1969 Investiture for the present day Prince of Wales. The nearby waterside market town of Conwy sits in another beautiful setting. Well-preserved ancient walls, the most intact in Europe, enclose a town of narrow cobbled streets, nooks and crannies full of historic buildings. Conwy Castle, another World Heritage Site, was also a key part of the ‘iron ring’ of fortresses built around Snowdonia in the 13th century. The quaint high street has plenty to explore, including the fascinating 16th century Plas Mawr said to be the best example of an intact Elizabethan house where history has stood still, or make your way down to the quay to see the smallest house in Britain!
